    GB-Toolbar FAQ

  1. What do the various buttons on the toolbar do? (Click on the toolbar to activate these buttons)

Common Ancestors -Common Ancestors are indicated by individuals (stars) that are colored blue. Common Ancestors are individuals who show up multiple times in your genealogy because they are connected to you in more than one genealogical line. If you mouse over a Common Ancestor, a line will appear connecting you to the other place in your genealogy where the same person exists. You will also find a button of a blue tilted line in the toolbar of Genealogy BrowserT. By clicking on this button, all of the lines between your common ancestors will appear in your StarfieldTM.

Hints -OneGreatFamily.com continually works for you as we try to find possible matches to your genealogy. When new information for your ancestors is found, a Gen-BulbTM icon will appear next the name of the individual in your pedigree. Simply click on the Gen-BulbTM, verify the new information, and your pedigree will automatically be updated.

Conflicts -This feature makes the verification of genealogical information possible by notifying you with the image of a yellow lightning bolt, called a Gen-BoltT when another OneGreatFamily user has conflicting information with your data. You can then collaborate with the source and work out your differences. If, in the end, you can''t resolve the conflict, you agree to disagree and each view the data as you believe it to be correct.

Tracer -This feature allows you to see how you are related to anyone in your pedigree. The trace to anchor displays a blue line from you to the ancestor, highlighting each individual in the direct lineage in between.

View Descendants -Allows you to view siblings, spouses, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc., of any individual in your genealogy.

Changing your views in the browser- There are four options: Anchors, Handprint, Star-field, and Search, which can be toggled so you are able to view different screens all at once. With our technology, you are able to switch from searching for ancestors to seeing Handprint.

Zoom-Allows you to dynamically zoom in on a few generations or zoom out to see your entire pedigree at once.

  2. What do the various buttons on the individual record do

Hints -OneGreatFamily.com continually works for you as we try to find possible matches to your genealogy. When new information for your ancestors is found, a Gen-BulbT icon will appear next to the name of the individual in your pedigree. Simply click on the Gen-BulbT, verify the new information, and your pedigree will automatically be updated.

Web Hints-Button for launching the hint window to see what information has been found on the World Wide Web.

Notes -The Notes section is where you store those extra bits of information that don''t seem to fit anywhere else, but are important enough to keep. When editing an individual''s information, click on the notes button on the right, represented here in the spot shadow. The notes window will display, and you can add notes as needed.

Biography - This feature allows you to easily enter biographical information about the person.

Research -Research notes can be extremely helpful to you and others working on the same areas of genealogy. While doing your research, leave yourself notes on recent information you have found, where you have left off, or anything that will help in the process. These notes will be helpful for you, others in your family group, and any others in OneGreatFamily that are trying to further the collaborative effort on research for that person.

Citations- Citations are specific proof and reference for information that you have found on an individual during your research. Obviously, citations are very important for establishing the credibility of information, but they can also help others in their research. The information you save in the citations becomes part of OneGreatFamily and is available to others to help with the collaborative effort.

Multimedia - Pictures, audio clips, and movies make for a rich family history experience.

Genealogy BrowserT allows you to upload and assign all of the multimedia files to specific people, allowing you to share the wealth of media that you have for the people in the genealogy you are working with.

Collaborate- To see who the other members in your family group are, just click on the Collaborate button inside the individual''s details box. If there is a certain member you would like to communicate with, just click on their name. You will then see their name and email address in the space below.

If you don''t see any Gen-Bulbs™ right away, don't worry! New information is being added to the database everyday! With each new user, you have a better chance of receiving hints. Also, the more information you add, the more likely you are to see Gen-Bulbs™.
