    GB-Editing Information FAQ

  1. How can I edit data for an individual in the Genealogy Browser™?

Changing data in Genealogy Browser™ is easy.

Anytime you want to edit someone, click on their name, it will move them to the Selected Individual box in the Handprint. It will also move their spouse to the spouse box, their parents to the father and mother box, their children to the children box, and their siblings (brothers and sisters) in the siblings box. Then click "Edit" in the Selected Individual box to open up the details for that person. You may make the changes, then make sure you click on Save to save the changes. If your group is the only owner of the record, the old information will be deleted. If other groups also own the information, your record will be updated and theirs will remain in conflict with yours until they accept the new information. 2. How can I get rid of duplication?

If you find duplicate records in OneGreatFamily, you can merge them. Before you merge any information, check to make sure they are duplicates, because mergers cannot be undone.

If the duplicate records are children of the same family, you may merge them by doing the following: Open the Family Info box, select two children you want to merge, and then select "Merge." The two records will then be displayed to certify that they are duplicates. It they are the same person, select "Merge" on the bottom left hand corner of the box on the right. This will NOT delete your information. After the merge, any differences in the two records will become conflicts.

To merge duplicate spouses of the same individual, you may merge them by doing the following: Open the "Details For" box for the individual with duplicate spouse. Select one spouse, hold the control key on your keyboard and select the other spouse. Then, press the Merge button to the right of their names. A screen will pop up giving instructions on comparing data. Click "Yes" to continue. If it's the same person, click on merge. A screen will again pop up and ask if you are sure you want to merge the families as one. Make sure you double check that the spouses are the same person on the two records. Click yes if it's the same person (even if the data is not exactly the same, but you can tell it's the same person.)

  3. How can I delete an individual?

To delete an individual, simply right-click on their name in Handprint and follow the prompts given from there. If you decide to delete the individual permanently, make sure that is really what you want to do, because the action is irreversible. You can also use the delete feature to remove individuals from families.

Select Remove from a selected family and click on Delete/Remove. It asks, "Are you removing this individual because it is a duplicate?" 5. How can I move a child from one family to another?

    1. You can change the family that a child is a part of by following these easy steps: Get the OGFN for the child you need to move: On the "Details For" box, the OGFN is listed below and to the right of the name.
    2. Remove the child from the family: Right click on the child's name and go to Remove Individual Del, removing them from a selected family as a child.
    3. Add the child as a new child in the correct family: Toggle to the correct family and double click on "Add Existing Individual" to add the child by OGFN.

Note: In order to add by OGFN, you must set your Genealogical Expertise Level to Advanced. Go to File, then User Preferences. Go to settings. Under genealogical expertise level, select Advanced. This will give you the option to add the ancestors in the right place.
