How can I see statistics on my pedigree?
by Jim Ericson -- OneGreatFamily
OneGreatFamily wants to help you understand your unique ancestry.
The service also wants to help you understand the state of your research.
While names, dates, places and biographical information are most valuable
to your research, numbers can also be helpful.
The Starfield View of your family tree provides statistics related to your pedigree. These numbers can help you see how much research has been done on your
family tree and where additional research may be needed.
Viewing the statistics for your pedigree is easy:
- Login to OneGreatFamily and launch Genealogy BrowserTM
- Position yourself as the anchor of the family tree
- Edit your preferences to see as many generations as you would like in the Starfield View. This is done by selecting "User Preferences" from the "File" menu
in Genealogy Browser. Select the "Settings" tab and edit the "Max Generations" number to the number of generations you would like to view. The more generations you choose,
the longer it will take to create the Starfield View.
- Make sure the button to "temporarily limit the Starfield View" is not selected.
- After the Starfield View is visible, look at the statistics line below the pedigree. You may need to zoom in or out slightly to be able to read the line of text that runs along the bottom.
The statistics line will tell you the following information for your pedigree:
how many individuals are in your pedigree
how many of your ancestors are common ancestors (duplicated in more than one relationship)
how many conflicts are in your pedigree
how many hints are in your pedigree
how many of the individuals in your pedigree have been merged
the number of generations
the size and number of the largest generation in your pedigree
These statistics can be helpful in describing the research that has taken place on your family tree. It can also help you identify how much research has been done and where you may want to pick up with your research.
We hope you enjoy the many features provided by OneGreatFamily and that you find them useful in furthering your research.

We continue to have customers who are troubled by inaccuracies they find in OneGreatFamily. The beauty of OneGreatFamily is that you can help people around the world IMPROVE the quality of their data by
making corrections within OneGreatFamily.
In response to one of these customers, we recently wrote the following message:
Thanks for your message. I think you are pointing out one of the strengths of OneGreatFamily in your message. OneGreatFamily allows people to make immediate changes to incorrect data such as this that everyone around the world can see. I, like you, don't like to see innacuracies perpetuated over time. Here is the process of making the change:
- Launch the OneGreatFamily Genealogy Browser.
- Search for the person whose information is incorrect.
- Change the incorrect information listed for this individual and make a note on the individual explaining your evidence for why your information is correct.
- Others who have this individual in their genealogies will now see there is a conflict with your view of this individual. They can accept your suggested change or keep their own version. You can also click on the "collaborate" button on the individual information screen to communicate with other groups via email to sort our the difference.
This is what makes OneGreatFamily so powerful. When one error is corrected by someone, everyone else received the benefit . . . if they choose to. This means people don't get to change your family tree, but they can suggest possible conflicts as new discoveries are made.
I hope this explains how this information can be updated in OneGreatFamily. I would make the change myself, but the individual in question isn't in my family tree. I would suggest that you or someone else who is a member of OneGreatFamily make the change in this case, since you have a vested interest in the ongoing research related to this individual.
Please let me know if you have other questions or concerns I can help address.
Warm Regards
OneGreatFamily
